A 2023356 This publication corresponds to the documents originally submitted. P123678NL00 Title: Device and method for forming patterns of boxes The present invention relates to an apparatus and to a method for forming patterns of boxes, in particular but not exclusively, forming patterns of egg cartons. Such a device is known from WO2007133078. It describes how layers of patterns of boxes, in particular small boxes such as egg cartons, are formed. These layers are then stacked one after the other to form a stack on a pallet. The chosen method of forming is such that the boxes are supplied next to each other by means of two conveyor belts in a conveying direction T to a forming location on each of these belts. Depending on the required pattern, the boxes are turned and / or shifted at these forming locations, after which the two streams are combined. Said turning and sliding are realized by vertically arranged columns or guide plates, in combination with rotating pushers. The boxes are thereby moved to a parallel path in the lateral direction, substantially transversely of the said transport direction T. From there, these partial flows are fed to a collection location and combined with sliding plates moving in the direction transverse to the conveying direction into a contiguous pattern of boxes. Clearly, this device is designed to automate stacking of layers on pallets. The size of this device is therefore considerable, whereby the formation of small patterns, and more particularly picking them up, is not possible. In modern packing stations, there is a need and the necessity to form small egg tray patterns quickly and automatically to fill matching boxes. The device described above is not suitable for this purpose. In order to meet the aforementioned need, the invention provides a device for forming patterns of boxes, in particular but not exclusively, forming patterns of egg cartons, the device being provided with a conveyor, wherein during use at least two boxes are left behind are conveyed to each other in a conveying direction T over the conveyor to a downstream intermediate position on said conveyor and wherein a column of boxes is formed, characterized in that the device comprises at least a single push rod which is arranged just above the conveyor and activated after reaching from said downstream intermediate position, can be moved transversely to said conveying direction T, said column of boxes being moved to a transverse end position. During use, the formed patterns can with great advantage be efficiently picked up and transported immediately with a gripper. With this method of treating patterns of boxes, for example egg cartons, the speed of handling is increased and thus the capacity of packaging is increased. For forming such patterns, an aspect of the present invention further provides a method for forming patterns of boxes, in particular but not exclusively, forming patterns of egg cartons, comprising, feeding at least two boxes one behind the other in a conveying direction T over a conveyor to a downstream intermediate position, and - sliding the boxes against each other, forming a column, the method being characterized by, - after reaching said downstream intermediate position, activating at least a single push rod which is arranged just above the conveyor, and - subsequently moving the column with the push rod in a direction transverse to the said transport direction to a transverse end position. A major advantage of an aspect of the present invention is the fact that the push rod, unlike the aforementioned and frequently used sliding plates, preferably fits nicely into the empty space near the underside of such egg cartons and can therefore only move in the transverse direction. be sufficient to move these boxes in the transverse direction. Boxes of such a type are shown, for example, in US3813027. From EP 1199265 a device is also known which moves products in the transverse direction by pushing against their underside. More in particular, the products are transported in a conveying direction by an endless conveyor consisting of rods or bars connected on both sides of the conveyor to motor-driven endless chains, a so-called bar tape, the products always slightly between the rods bags. Just below the rods on which the products are located, an endless conveyor belt is arranged in the transverse direction with strings just between a number of these rods, wherein the strings can be moved to one side or the other. As soon as a product has arrived at the location of these strings, this product can be pushed accordingly to one side or the other. It will be clear to any person skilled in the art that for boxes with a flat bottom this method of moving or sliding does not suffice. The present invention will be explained in more detail below with reference to a drawing, wherein FIGURE 1 shows a top view of an exemplary embodiment of the device during a first step of forming a pattern, wherein FIGURE 2 shows a top view of this exemplary embodiment of the invention. device during a second step of forming a pattern, wherein FIGURE 3 shows a top view of the exemplary embodiment of the device during a final step of forming a pattern, and wherein FIGURE 4 schematically shows a side view of the downstream end of device just before picking up such a pattern. In the different FIGURES, the same part or property is represented by the same number or symbol. Figures 1-4 show an embodiment of a device for forming patterns of boxes (P), in particular but not exclusively, forming patterns of egg cartons. The device is provided with a conveyor 1, and, as follows from the figure, during use at least two boxes P are conveyed one after the other in a conveying direction T over the conveyor 1 to a downstream intermediate position 100 on said conveyor 1 and wherein a column K1 is formed from boxes. With great advantage, the device comprises a push rod 2, which is arranged just above the conveyor 1 and can be activated when the boxes have reached said downstream intermediate position 100, to be displaced in a transverse direction with respect to said conveying direction T. The said column K1 can be moved from boxes P to a transverse end position 101 by the push rod 2. More particularly, FIGURE 1 shows a top view of the exemplary embodiment of the device during a first step of forming a pattern. On conveyor 1, products P, for example egg cartons, are conveyed to said intermediate position 100 in conveying direction T, wherein the products pushed behind and against each other, boxes in the present case, form a column K1 which is pushed against an intermediate stop element 5. Such an intermediate stop element 5 is, for example, a raised edge. It is also possible to use a plate with such friction on the upper surface over which the boxes or boxes P are slid that in the case of the prevailing pushing force or shearing force a specific position for such a column is Klingenomen. It will be clear to a person skilled in the art that many types of conveyor are suitable for carrying out such movements and movements. A well-known example is that in which the conveyor is endless and in which the conveying surface consists of freely rotating cross bars, with sufficient friction to carry the boxes P, and rotating and moving under the boxes P as soon as the column has arrived at the intermediate position 100. Furthermore, in this FIGURE 1 a sliding rod (i.e. said push rod) 2 is indicated, in a position entirely adjacent to the location of the sliding rod 2 for sliding against the boxes P which, as indicated in FIGURE 1, form a column K1. FIGURE 2 shows a top view of this exemplary embodiment of the device during a second step of forming a pattern. As shown, the sliding rod 2 is moved in a direction S1 (perpendicular to the conveying direction T) and has thereby shifted the column K1 of boxes P from the intermediate position 100 to a transverse end position 101, in the direction of and against an end stop element 4. On in the same manner as above, this end stop element 4 can comprise a raised edge or a surface with a specific friction. FIGURE 3 shows a top view of this exemplary embodiment of the device during a final step of forming a pattern. More in particular, a second column of boxes P is slid along the first column, the direction of these boxes being changed in this second column. As follows in particular from the drawing, in this case an orientation of the latter boxes P is rotated by 900 relative to an orientation of the previous boxes (i.e. a box orientation on the conveyor 1, seen in top view). As FIGURE 3 and FIGURE 4 further show, the sliding rod 2 can preferably be located in an empty space between the first column boxes K1 moved by said rod 2 and the subsequently supplied boxes (which form a second column K2), the first column boxes K1 and the next column of boxes K2 in this case together comprise the box pattern to be formed. The rod can remain in that position until the pattern K1, K2 formed has been taken away from the conveyor 2, to be subsequently moved back to the starting position shown in FIGURE 1 (for engagement with a next column of boxes of a next pattern to be formed). ί As usual, such patterns are formed to be further packed in boxes. Such boxes are also referred to as outer cartons. A plurality of layers of such patterns are usually placed in such an outer carton. In order to pick up, transport and place such a pattern in one go, grippers, for example connected to a mast or to a robot arm, have been developed that can engage and pick up such a pattern without disturbing the pattern , and in particular without opening such egg boxes undesirably. For example, in EP 1502884 such a gripper is described with which these operations can be performed in a suitable manner. FIGURE 4 schematically shows a side view of the downstream end of the device just prior to picking up such a pattern. More in particular, this is a view along the conveying direction T, namely against the supply direction. Furthermore, the end stop line 4, the start of the sliding rod 2, is connected to a rod controller 3 which can move the sliding rod 2 in two directions Si or S2, for example as indicated in FIGURE 2 where the sliding rod 2 moves the column in the direction of Si shifts. The sliding rod 2 can be moved, for example, in the direction S2 opposite to S1 after the pattern has been formed, to a starting position for forming a subsequent box pattern. It will be clear to any person skilled in the art that many possible rod controls 3 can be used, for example combinations of a motor and a chain or a pulley. FIGURE 4 further indicates a gripper head 7 with gripper blades 71, which can be moved inter alia in directions G1, G2 to cover the pattern and then support it from below, after which picking up and transporting is possible, for example mentioned above with the gripper according to EP 1502884. Forming larger patterns can mean that several sliding rods 2 are provided accordingly. Its operation will take place in a similar manner. In another embodiment, heavier rods 2 can also be used for larger and heavier boxes. In principle, the sliding rod 2 has a fixed height above the surface of the conveyor belt 1 and retains the height during the shifting of packaging units to the desired position. Depending on the dimensions of these packaging units, this height can be made adjustable. Of course, multiple movements and movement ranges can be selected for the method of recording a pattern. It has been found that with great advantage the gripper 7 can already be moved through the sliding rod 2 in the direction of the pattern of boxes P to be picked up while moving and forming. In particular, the processing time can be shortened in this way, and thus the processing capacity can be increased. A further operation of the gripper may be that when the gripper blades 71, 72 are squeezed slightly, in particular the second column as indicated in FIGURE 3 is pressed close to the first and in this way a certain manner of transport is obtained. It will be clear to any person skilled in the art that various changes in the device and method as described above for a specific exemplary embodiment are considered to be understood within the scope of the appended claims.
